Getting started
How do I make my first movie? Tap New movie, pick a shape and speed, and point the camera at your scene. Take a photo, move your figure a tiny bit, and take the next one. Tap Edit to play your movie, then Export to save it.
How far should I move things between photos? Very little, about a finger's width. Small moves and many frames make smooth motion. At 12 frames per second, 12 photos make one second of movie.
What is onion skin? It shows your last photo faintly over the live camera, so you can see how far you moved things. Turn it on with the Onion button and set how strong it is.
Do I need a tripod? The phone must not move between photos. Use a phone stand or tripod. On an iPhone that folds, fold it halfway and stand it on the table: it becomes its own stand.
Taking photos
Can I take photos without touching the screen? Yes. Use either volume button, the Camera Control button (on iPhones that have one), the Timer, the Interval mode for time-lapse, or Voice mode to take a photo when you clap or say "Snap!".
What is "Steady time"? After you press the shutter, the app waits a moment before taking the photo, so the shake from your finger doesn't blur the frame. "Auto" picks a good wait for each button. You can change it in Settings › Steady time.
The light flickers between frames. How do I stop it? Tap Lock to fix focus, exposure and white balance. Avoid changing room lights or standing between the light and your scene while you shoot.
The app says the camera moved. Something bumped the phone. Use Show outline to line the shot up again, or keep going if the change is small.
Editing and sound
How do I fix a frame? In Edit, select frames in the strip to duplicate, delete, reverse or hold them longer. Undo and redo are always there.
How do I add sound? In Edit, tap the microphone to record your voice while the movie plays, or tap + to add a starter sound, a song from your library or a file from Files. Drag the sound to where it should start, and set its volume and fade.
Saving and sharing
Where are my movies saved? Projects are saved inside the app on your iPhone. To share a movie, tap Export and save it as a video or GIF to Photos, or share it from there.
Are my projects backed up? Projects live only on your device and are not uploaded anywhere. Deleting the app deletes its projects, so export movies you want to keep to Photos.
Export stopped or my phone is full. Long movies at high quality need space. Free up some storage in Settings › General › iPhone Storage, then try again. The app warns you before space runs low.
Stop Motion Stage Pro
What does Pro add? 4K capture and export, HEVC files, no end card on your movies, a printable flipbook, and different speeds in one movie. It is a one-time purchase, shared with your family through Family Sharing.
I bought Pro but it is not unlocked. Open Settings › Restore purchase and use the same Apple Account you bought it with. For Family Sharing, the buyer must have Family Sharing turned on for purchases.
How do I get a refund? Refunds are handled by Apple. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account.
Permissions
I said "Don't Allow" to the camera or microphone. Open the iPhone Settings app › Stop Motion Stage and turn on Camera, Microphone or Photos (Photos is only for saving your movies). The microphone is needed only for voice-overs and the hands-free Voice mode. Adding photos from your library needs no permission.
Privacy
